Against the Silences
Paul Blackburn

Afternoon, Yeats

Dying is like this:
to settle for the solid virtues
when the clouds are
black and the storm
coming . get inside . to
trade off the pearls
of greatest beauty and price
for wood and copper
for brass beads,
and wear them with the same pride
that love traded off
that beauty lost forever in the
dullness of every
day,
when the sun comes up
just the same,

as lovely as it ever was
